Have diet and exercise failed to provide the body sculpting results you desire? When performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, liposuction is an excellent way to reshape stubborn “problem areas” and improve the overall proportions of your figure.
What Liposuction Treats
Liposuction is used to remove fat deposits from the following areas of the body:
Candidates for Liposuction
The BOD doctors will determine whether you are a suitable liposuction candidate after reviewing your medical history, performing a physical examination and discussing your aesthetic objectives.
You are likely a good candidate for liposuction if you:
During your liposuction consultation, the BOD surgeons will discuss the procedure with you in more detail. They will also ask you to describe your desired results and your expectations of the surgery. Once they’ve determined that liposuction is a good fit for your needs, you can schedule your procedure with our patient coordinator and discuss the logistical details of surgery, such as pricing, preparing for surgery and what to expect on the day of surgery.
The BOD plastic surgeons use several liposuction techniques to remove excess fat. Traditional liposuction involves inserting a thin tube called a cannula into the treatment area, moving it back and forth to break up fat and then using suction to remove the fat from the body.
One of the more modern techniques is tumescent liposuction, in which a saline solution is injected into the treatment area to firm up the fat, making it easier to remove from the body. The tumescent solution, which includes a small amount of epinephrine, also reduces the trauma to the surrounding tissues. Tumescent liposuction uses a much smaller cannula, which requires a smaller incision, causes less bleeding and reduces recovery time.
Another modern technique is ultrasonic-assisted liposuction. Ultrasonic waves are directed at the treatment area via a vibrating cannula; the ultrasonic energy liquefies the fat cells, which are then easily suctioned from the body.
The BOD plastic surgeons will explain these liposuction techniques in greater detail during your consultation. They will recommend the technique they feel will produce the best results with minimal side effects.
Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis. You will receive anesthesia medications to prevent you from feeling any pain.
The surgeon starts by making an incision in the treatment area, and inserting the cannula. He uses the cannula and suction to remove fat and sculpt the area until he has achieved the desired shape. Depending on the goals of your treatment plan, the surgeon may contour several different areas during the same surgery. When he is satisfied with the results, he will stitch the incisions closed and place a compression garment.
We will provide comprehensive recovery instructions before you leave the surgery center. Our team is always available via phone or email to answer any questions.
You may feel sore or swollen after your liposuction procedure, but these side effects will subside over time. In the days following your surgery, you should avoid any strenuous activity, including bending and lifting, which could cause complications. You are encouraged to engage in light activity, such as gentle walking, for proper circulation, but should wait for our doctors to clear you to return to exercise and other activities.
Although everyone heals at a different pace, in general most of our patients return to work after a week or so.
The BOD team will schedule several post-operative visits to check your healing progress, remove your sutures and answer any questions you have.
