Nose Surgery in Miami
What Rhinoplasty Can Accomplish
Rhinoplasty surgery is a highly personalized procedure and can address a number of different needs. For example, rhinoplasty can bring an oversized or undersized nose into better proportion with the rest of the face. It can also refine certain features of the nose, such as the bridge, nostrils and tip. For other patients, rhinoplasty may repair a deviated septum that is causing breathing problems.
The BOD surgeons meet in-person with every rhinoplasty candidate to discuss the procedure and determine candidacy. Their experience enables them to judge who is a good candidate for the procedure. Typically, good candidates are individuals who:
During your rhinoplasty consultation, our doctors will perform a physical examination of your nose. They will also review your medical history and inquire about the goals you are seeking to achieve through surgery. If you have questions about the procedure or what it entails, the consultation is a great time to ask our knowledgeable surgeons. Once it has been determined that you are a good candidate for surgery, our doctors will begin drafting a surgical plan.
Rhinoplasty is highly personalized and will vary based on your needs and goals. In general, it is performed on an outpatient basis at a local surgery center or in our office. Prior to surgery, you will receive anesthesia to prevent you from feeling any pain during your procedure.
Our rhinoplasty surgeons will take either an “open” or a “closed” approach. Each approach has its pros and cons, which will be discussed with you during your consultation.
With the open approach, the surgeon makes an incision across the strip of skin separating the nostrils (called the columella). Through this incision, he can attain a better view of the internal nasal structures. With the closed approach, the surgeon keeps the incisions within the nostrils; while he won’t have the visibility that is possible with open rhinoplasty, the nose will heal faster and there won’t be any chance of external scarring.
Through the incision, the surgeon will modify the underlying nasal structures by sculpting, reducing or augmenting the nasal bone and cartilage. He can use different techniques to improve the size and/or shape of the nose or refine a particular feature (e.g., the tip or nostrils).
After making the necessary surgical modifications, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and apply surgical dressings. A splint or packing may also be placed to support the nasal structures as they heal.
We will provide comprehensive recovery instructions before you leave the surgery center. Our team is always available via phone or email to answer any questions.
Your nose may be sore, swollen, bruised or stuffy following rhinoplasty surgery, but these symptoms will gradually subside. If you are in pain during your recovery, our doctors will prescribe oral medication for relief.
Everyone recovers from surgery at a different pace, but most patients need to take one to two weeks off from work to heal. During this time, you should get plenty of rest and relaxation. Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling, and avoid any strenuous movements, including exercise, until our doctors advise it is safe to do so. They will schedule several follow-up visits to check your healing progress, remove stitches and answer any questions you may have.
